Ontario to Host 2013 Council of the Federation Summer Meeting

HALIFAX, July 27, 2012 – Ontario will host the 2013 summer meeting of the Council of the Federation.

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty announced that the next Council of the Federation summer meeting will be held in Niagara-on-the-Lake from July 24-26, 2013. It will be an opportunity for Premiers to meet and discuss how they can shape the national agenda together.

“It will be great to see my colleagues at Niagara-on-the-Lake next summer,” McGuinty said. “The first capital of Upper Canada is a fitting place to work together to strengthen our provincial and territorial voices and influence the national agenda.”

Ontario’s Niagara region is rich in history and natural wonders, and was on the front lines of the War of 1812 between the United States and Great Britain. It was the first capital of Upper Canada (later Ontario). This will also be an opportunity to showcase the region as a destination for tourists and business.

The Council of the Federation was created in 2003 to promote provincial-territorial cooperation and closer ties between members, foster meaningful relations between governments based on respect for the Constitution and recognition of the diversity within the federation, and show leadership on issues important to all Canadians.
